In our project, the aim is to determine the effects of floods, frequently occurring and highly damaging events that often reach disaster levels in Turkey and particularly around the ?zmir region, on trees. The lower section of the De?irmen Stream valley, located in the Emiralem area of Mount Yamanlar, constitutes our research area. To assess the impact of floods on trees, we employed the materials and methods of dendrochronology.
Samples were collected from red pine trees in the study area using an increment borer. These samples were analyzed in the laboratory using the LINTAB-TSAP system, and the COFECHA program was utilized to correct any errors. As a result, three red pine tree-ring chronologies were obtained, with lengths of 114, 102, and 101 years. The longest chronology spans the years 1911 to 2024.
To determine the influence of floods on annual tree-ring growth, the chronology derived from trees on the valley slope, unaffected by flooding (control chronology), was compared with the chronology developed from trees located on the valley floor within the floodplain.
